We understand that problems with your wisdom teeth are irritating at the very least, and that, despite being the most common surgical procedure performed in the UK, the prospect of wisdom tooth surgery can be daunting. Fortunately, at infinityblu, we have our very own Oral Surgery team working under the direction of Dr Audrey Kershaw. Audrey is a GDC-registered Specialist with over 30 years’ experience and has worked all over the UK in clinical and teaching roles. She is particularly excellent with patients who feel anxious about dental treatment and is committed to a holistic and patient-centred approach. She always mindful that while what she does may be routine for her, for her patient, it can very much be a new and unknown experience.
Our modern and welcoming infinityblu practices are fully equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to support us in giving you the highest quality care. This means that there is no need to travel far from home to busy dental hospitals, nor suffer long delays on waiting lists to get the treatment you need. Instead, we offer the reassurance of thorough and unhurried visit to our friendly high-street practices no more than two weeks from referral.
Whether you’ve been an infinityblu member for years, have been referred to us for the first time, or wish to get in touch as a self-referral, our highly trained clinical team ¬will take you from initial consultation, to radiographs, and on to surgery all under one roof, and often, even in one appointment.
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars or ‘eights’, grow in between late teenage years and early adulthood. Most people have one in at each of the four corners of the mouth.
Because wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt, there sometimes isn’t enough room left for them by the time they come through. This means that they can end up getting stuck halfway or erupting at an awkward angle. Your dentist may have described them to you as ‘partially erupted’ or ‘impacted’ during your regular check-ups.
When this happens, wisdom teeth become very difficult to clean properly and can be susceptible to bacterial build-up. This damages healthy tooth and gum tissue in the area; and can result in pain, irritation, and infection. This is most commonly a condition called ‘pericoronitis’, but infections in and around impacted wisdom teeth can have a few other causes. Your dentist may have had to prescribe you antibiotics for this; or have flushed out the area with an antibacterial wash to get the pain and infection under control.
Because impacted wisdom teeth are so difficult to access, there is often no way to cure or reliably prevent these types of infections persisting and reoccurring, and this can start to damage to healthy, functional teeth nearby. That is why removing the tooth is often the best solution as it permanently eliminates places for the bacteria to hide, and helps infection settle down straight away. Fortunately, wisdom teeth contribute very little to chewing function and are not noticed in the smile, so they are rarely missed; and the procedure is safe, reliable, and effective.
We follow NICE and NHS guidelines at all stages of our treatment and ensure everything we do is evidence-based.
All Oral Surgery at infinityblu is performed by Dr Audrey Kershaw. Audrey has over 30 years’ experience performing wisdom tooth surgery and is particularly excellent with patients who are anxious about dental procedures. You can find her full biography here
Oral Surgeons specialise in taking out teeth and undergo a minimum of three years of highly competitive postgraduate training to master the most effective techniques for safe tooth extraction. Because wisdom teeth can be more challenging than other teeth, this extra training makes Oral Surgeons extremely well placed to perform the procedure safely and effectively, while giving you the reassurance that your care is being handled by a clinician who is fully up to date with best practice. That’s why most dentists working in general practice refer wisdom tooth cases on to Oral Surgeons, and why all Oral Surgery within infinityblu is handled by Dr Kershaw.
We treat patients throughout Scotland and are proud to accept referrals for our Specialist Oral Surgery service from Dundee, Fife, Stirlingshire, Highlands, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Perthshire to name a few.
infinityblu’s Oral Surgeon, Dr Audrey Kershaw, takes pride in being able to call on her 30+ years of experience to make your wisdom tooth surgery as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
To start off with, we’ll welcome you through to one of our modern surgeries and have a relaxed run-through of your medical and dental history. If you take medication, it can be helpful to bring along a copy of your prescriptions so we can add this to your records.
Dr Kershaw will then perform an examination of your mouth (just like a regular dental exam) and may request some x-rays or a Cone-Beam CT scan to visualise the tooth’s position and plan the surgery.
If Dr Kershaw thinks that treatment is advisable, we’ll take the time to explain the procedure fully and talk through risks, benefits, and alternatives with you. We can take the time to answer any questions you have ¬– or simply just get on with it if you’d prefer!
If you wish to go ahead, Audrey will then administer local anaesthetic to freeze up the area around the tooth. This is often all that is required to make the procedure pain-free and can sometimes be so effective that many patients don’t even realise when the tooth is out! The procedure is done in using a fully sterile set-up and you’ll feel no more than a bit of pushing and possibly some water spray from a handpiece as the tooth is removed. Some stiches may then be placed to close the area up. Altogether, this part of the appointment usually takes between 5 and 30 minutes.
We’ll finish up by making sure that any bleeding has stopped, and you will be able to leave as soon as you feel ready.
It is common to feel a bit fatigued after wisdom tooth surgery and to experience some postoperative pain as the area settles down. There may also be some bruising or swelling. We’ll give you all the postoperative advice you need during your appointment, but we usually recommend setting aside a few days after your surgery to rest and recover. Most people are completely back to normal after 7-10 days.
A copy of the sheet we’ll give you to take away with you, so you know exactly what to expect. If you have any questions or require any further advice, don’t hesitate to call the practice which you attended for your surgery.
Visited the Dunkeld practice yesterday after a referral from my local dentist. I had to had a tooth removal and I was absolutely terrified. From the second I arrived I was eased! Audrey was incredible talking to me through everything before we started and a massive thank you to Emma who said I can squeeze her hand as hard as I had to! All very good COVID practices in place too! If you are a nervous patient I would highly recommend!!! Thank you all again!!
Thank you for taking the time to make what seemed a daunting thought for me, so easy. And thank you for taking the time and patience to explain everything to me and reassure me and make me feel at ease and in control. Thank you.
