Scottish Action for Mental Health
Women's Mental Health - Key Challenges

This month, with the support of our charity partner SAMH, we're helping raise awareness of women's mental health and some of the unique challenges women may face.
Life events like pregnancy and menopause, alongside pressures around body image, stress, and anxiety, can all affect women's mental wellbeing.
Discrimination based on race, sexuality, or income can also increase mental health pressures — and trans men, non-binary, and intersex people may experience some of these challenges too.

Women are more likely to experience:
• Depression
• Anxiety
• PTSD
• Eating problems

Hormonal changes and societal expectations can make it harder to maintain good mental health and balance.

Maternal Mental Health
Around 1 in 5 women experience mental health problems during pregnancy or after giving birth, including perinatal depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

Menopause and Mental Health
Hormonal shifts during menopause can impact both mental and physical health — with 94% of those surveyed by SAMH reporting mood changes.
